MK Dons and Northampton will face Walsall and Bradford City in League One in the 2016/17 season after both lost in the play-offs.

Confirmation comes following the final play-offs this week, which saw Walsall beaten by Barnsley and Bradford losing to Millwall. The result ends the hopes of the two sides of moving to the Championship, and confirms visits for both teams to stadium:mk and Sixfields.

Walsall had finished third and were edged out in the race for automatic promotion on the final day after Burton Albion drew at Doncaster. They then lost 3-0 at Oakwell in the first leg of their play-off semi-final with Barnsley, who then also proceeded to win 3-1 at the Bescot Stadium.

Meanwhile, Bradford came 5th and ultimately lost their semi-final against Millwall 4-2 on aggregate, with most of the damage done in a 3-1 home defeat at Valley Parade.

Both sides faced the Dons in League One in 2014-15. The duo proved tough opponents for the MK team that got promotion that season, with the Dons only picking up one point from the two league meetings with the Saddlers, the other of which ended in a 3-0 home defeat, and they were also beaten home and away by the Bantams, although the Dons did beat Bradford in the League Cup.

Northampton last played Walsall when they were relegated from League One in the 2008-09 season, with the Saddlers picking up six points from the two meetings. The Cobblers’ last match against Bradford City came at Wembley in the 2013 League Two play-off final, where they were beaten 3-0. That season also saw the Bantams beat Northampton home and away in the regular league season, and on penalties after a 3-3 draw in an FA Cup First Round Replay.

This leaves 2 more teams to be confirmed, who will be the winner of the League Two play-off final and the loser of the League One play-off final. First off will be the League One final between Barnsley and Millwall on May 29th, and that will be followed the day after by the League Two play-off final, which will see Plymouth Argyle take on AFC Wimbledon.
