MK Dons have announced they have completed the signing of Barnsley defender George Williams on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old full back will officially be registered at stadiummk when his Tykes contract expires at the end of June.

Williams was an academy graduate at the Dons before being released by the club four years ago, but will now return to his hometown.

Initially, Barnsley offered the defender a new contract with the club but that was later retracted allowing him to discuss terms with other sides.

He becomes Karl Robinson’s second signing in two days following the free transfer of Walsall centre-back Paul Downing.

The defence was an area that Robinson has desperately needed to strengthen following the departures of Antony Kay, Jordan Spence, Matty Upson and Harry Hickford, while Kyle McFadzean is believed to have handed in a transfer request.

Ed Upson, a midfielder from Millwall, is the only other player to sign on the dotted line at stadiummk so far this summer as the Dons strengthen following their relegation from the Championship.
