Former Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder enjoyed a successful return to Sixfields as his Sheffield United side won promotion.

John Fleck’s goal in the 88th minute saw the Blades come from behind to win 2-1 at Northampton, and confirm promotion to the Championship. It also ensured a second successive promotion for Wilder, who lead Northampton to the League Two title last season.

Justin Edinburgh’s Cobblers had taken the lead in first half injury time through captain Marc Richards, when his angled effort crashed into the back of the net.

Northampton had to ride out early pressure, with Samir Carruthers hitting the bar and Leon Clarke seeing an effort go wide. But the hosts did have chances, with Michael Smith denied by Simon Moore and Luke Williams having seen an effort blocked.

Just after the hour, the visitors equalised. A through-ball released Clarke, who coolly finished past Adam Smith.

Defeat for third place Fleetwood meant the visitors were promoted regardless of their result in this game, but Sheffield United confirmed their second tier place late on when Fleck turned in.

It was tough for the hosts, who end the day 15th in the table.
