Cobblers duo Richards & O’Toole sign extensions
Northampton Town duo Marc Richards and John-Joe O’Toole have signed new deals with the League One club.
Cobblers skipper Richards has signed a one year extension at Sixfields, while O’Toole has put pen to paper on a two year extension.
Richards joined the Cobblers in 2014 on a free transfer from Chesterfield, having had a previous spell with Northampton between 2003 and 2005.
The striker has reached 200 goals overall, and the striker is Northampton’s top scorer in the current season. Speaking to the official Northampton Town site, manager Justin Edinburgh has voiced his delight at signing his skipper for another deal.
He said, “Marc is not just a very good player, he is a captain, a leader and someone who helps sets the tone in the dressing room. He has a fantastic attitude, his goal tally this season is impressive, he looks as fit and strong as ever and we are delighted we have retained his services.
“I know he feels happy and settled at the club, and we have re-signed a top, top professional and someone who can help us take the club forward. In the last two days we have kept hold of two of our key players from the last two seasons, who have scored 55 goals for the club in that time, and it is an excellent way to begin our summer’s work.
“I know the supporters hold both players in very high esteem and I am sure they will be delighted with this news.”
O’Toole joined Northampton in 2014 from Bristol Rovers. The midfielder was voted the team’s Player of the Year last season, and has scored 26 times for the side.
On securing the future of O’Toole, Edinburgh told the official Northampton Town site, “Securing the services of John-Joe is a huge boost for us. We knew there would be a lot of interest in him so we were very keen to get John-Joe’s future secured early and we are delighted to have done just that.
“Goalscoring midfielders are very hard to come by and John-Joe won us some big matches this season with some very important goals. His all round game was also very impressive and I have delighted with his attitude and commitment to the club.
“We have re-signed a player at an excellent age and this is fantastic business to start our summer work.”
