Gboly Ariyibi netted in extra-time to help MK Dons overcome Forest Green Rover and reach the second round of the EFL Cup.
The game seemed destined for penalties with no goals after 110 minutes of action but a stunning effort from Ariyibi’s first goal for the club nicked it for Robbie Neilson’s men.
And now the Dons will be looking forward to the second round draw on Thursday where the majority of Premier League sides will be waiting.
The best chance of the first half fell to defender Paul Downing who saw his shot from Ariyibi saved.
Ed Upson had a go at putting the away side in front when his long range strike flew just over the crossbar.
Alex Nicholls kept the Dons level with an excellent full stretch stop from Charlie Cooper’s effort, after denying Shamir Mullings twice from point blank range.
Ariyibi almost won it in the dying embers of the game as his struck flew agonisingly wide of the post.
The game went into extra time and Scott Laird came within inches of putting the League Two side in front when his effort struck the woodwork.
In the second period Aryibi hit a wonderful effort beyond the goalkeeper to finally give the Dons the lead and their first goal of the season.
But it wasn’t plain sailing for the the visitors after that as Nicholls was again there to brilliantly deny Forest Green Rovers a leveller.
