Luton Town have been knocked out of the EFL Cup in the first round with two goals from striker David McGoldrick enough to send Ipswich Town through.
The defeat will bring the Hatters back down to earth after the highs of Saturday’s 8-2 thrashing of Yeovil Town on the opening day of the League Two season.
But Nathan Jones will be pleased his side fought to really push their Championship opposition with Elliot Lee going close to an equaliser on a couple of occasions.
Teenager Flynn Downes almost doubled the Tractor Boys advantage with a fizzing shot which landed just the wrong side of the post.
But it was Town who were causing all the problems in the second period, but Marek Stech had to be on hand to give them hope as he turned over McGoldrick’s effort late on.
McGoldrick then did kill the game off with just seconds remaining on the clock as his double sends Luton out of the cup and sees Mick McCarthy’s men march on and will find out their second round opponents in the draw on Thursday.
