Northampton were beaten 1-0 by Fleetwood Town in their first home game of the season.

Devante Cole scored the game’s only goal in the final 15 minutes of normal time. The striker’s late finish after being played through beat David Cornell, with a strike that gives Fleetwood 2 wins out of 2 and Northampton a second defeat of the season.

The Cobblers had chances to get victory, with the majority of their opportunities coming in the first half after Fleetwood saw some early chances repelled.

Alex Cairns denied Chris Long before Aaron Pierre volleyed over at a corner, and Yaser Kasim came close with a free-kick. The closest Northampton came was following a scramble at a corner saw Long have an effort cleared off the line, and Cairns making three close range stops to deny Pierre & Billy Waters.

Despite throwing on Marc Richards, Northampton couldn’t find a way past a stubborn Fleetwood defence in the closing stages of the game.

The result means that despite some promising touches, Justin Edinburgh side’s were beaten 1-0 for the third time in the season’s opening week, following an opening day reverse at Shrewsbury and a Carabao Cup defeat to QPR.
