Northampton Town are out of the League One relegation zone after a 2-1 win at Oxford United.

The Cobblers jumped out of the bottom 4 with goals from Ash Taylor and Chris Long deciding their contest. Taylor bundled the visitors ahead at a corner to give them an early lead.

Daniel Powell left the field injured in an early blow but Northampton forced a smattering of chances in the early exchanges, with Simon Eastwood denying Lewis McGugan and Long seeing a strike blocked.

Oxford equalised late in the first half through Wes Thomas, who had just enough to flick James Henry’s cross past Matt Ingram.

But the game wasn’t level for long, as within two minutes, Long put Northampton back in front as he evaded his marker and struck home.

Long nearly set up a third as Billy Waters was denied shooting room by his marker. But the home side had few chances to get back into the game, with the closest seeing Matt Ingram denying Rob Hall, and Northampton left with the points to climb out of the bottom four.
