Luton Town will play Premier League side Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the FA Cup Third Round.

The draw means a second consecutive trip to the North East for Nathan Jones’ League Two high-flyers in the FA Cup, after they previously beat Gateshead 5-0 in the Second Round. The Hatters also beat Portsmouth on their way to setting up a tie with Rafa Benitez’s top flight outfit.

Luton’s last meeting with Newcastle saw them beat the Magpies in the FA Cup in 1994, with the Hatters winning 2-0 in a replay at Kenilworth Road.

This is the fourth time that the Hatters and the Magpies have faced one another in the competition, while the two sides were also previously semi-regular opponents in the league in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

The draw also sees Luton duo Olly and Elliot Lee play at a former club of their father Rob, who was a regular pick in central midfield for Newcastle during the 1990’s.

The match will take place on the weekend of January 5th-8th. Because of the progression, the League Two match against Wycombe Wanderers that had been scheduled for the same weekend has been postponed.
