Cobblers pick up point from clash with Shrewsbury
Northampton Town picked up a point after a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town at Sixfields
With Fleetwood beating Rochdale in a simultaneous match, the result was not enough to get the Cobblers out of the drop zone, but brings them level on points with Oldham Athletic in the race to stay up.
Shay Facey put Northampton ahead in first-half stoppage time when he turned in Joe Bunney’s cross. The Cobblers had earlier gone close through Kevin van Veen, with Shrewsbury also seeing a shot from Abu Ogogo having a header deflected wide.
A flash point came during the second half, when John-Joe O’Toole and Ogogo were both shown straight red cards for their parts in starting a mass melee.
Northampton had seen a few efforts blocked before the dismissals, but they were pegged back shortly after through Jon Nolan. The Shrewsbury midfielder’s 20 yarder beat the keeper to bring the promotion chasing visitors level.
Shrewsbury’s Omar Beckles hit the bar in the best chance to find a winner, as the points were shared.
