Luton Town promoted to League One after draw at Carlisle
Luton Town have been promoted to League One after a 1-1 draw with Carlisle United, and Exeter City failed to beat Crawley Town.
The result confirms Luton’s return to the 3rd tier since the 2007-08 season. Their promotion saw their team match the draw Exeter could only register in their clash, and ensured that Nathan Jones’ side can no longer be caught by the Grecians.
Olly Lee’s second half goal was the strike that confirmed their promotion, with his strike an equaliser to cancel out Danny Grainger’s first half penalty.
After a busy start, Carlisle took the lead from the spot just before the quarter hour mark as James Shea fouled Richie Bennett and Grainger beat the Luton goalkeeper from 12 yards.
Luton responded by applying pressure on the Carlisle goal, but couldn’t find their way through and left fans listening in for news from Devon.
A few moments after Crawley equalised in their own lively match at St. James’ Park, Luton found an equaliser of their own as Olly Lee converted the rebound after Danny Hylton’s initial strike was blocked.
Luton missed late opportunities to make absolutely sure of promotion, with Hylton, Olly Lee and Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu all coming close.
But the Bedfordshire side were not to be denied their promotion, and the result confirms that the highest scorers in the EFL have confirmed their return to the third tier of English football.
