Late equaliser sees Luton draw with Cheltenham
A late strike from Alan Sheehan saw League Two leaders Luton Town come from 2-0 down to draw with Cheltenham Town.
Cheltenham had taken a two goal lead through Joe Morrell and Mohamed Eisa. In-between the two Robins strikes, Luton saw James Collins’ penalty saved, which was controversially awarded after Olly Lee had scored but saw the referee fail to play advantage after an earlier foul.
Luke Berry bought the home side back to within a goal, before the late conclusion saw Luton pick up a late point.
Luton had seen a couple of first half opportunities, but failed to take them and found themselves behind in the final minutes of the half. A half-cleared ball fell to Morrell, who slammed the ball past Marek Stech from 30 yards.
The controversial penalty award came moments into the second half, as Collins was hauled over and the referee awarded the spot-kick before Olly Lee turned the ball in. This was duly worse for Luton when away goalkeeper Ross Flinders kept out Collins’ penalty.
Cheltenham duly made things worse for the hosts when Eisa headed in Taylor Moore’s cross. But the away side only had a two goal lead for three minutes, as Berry was able to slot the ball in.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser, and moments after Danny Hylton was denied, Sheehan headed in Luke Gambin’s corner in injury time to preserve a point.
With Accrington Stanley beating Cambridge, the Hatters are now 3 points clear at the top. Nathan Jones’ side are also 7 points clear of the play-off places after Notts County beat Stevenage.
