NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has sent a surprise message to League 2 frontrunners Northampton Town giving them his support for the campaign.

The Cobblers are currently five points clear at the top of the fourth tier with a game in hand and now they’ve received backing from the 43-year-old former basketball star.

It seems odd an American would find a lower league football team to support in the UK, but the club’s new owner Kelvin Thomas owns Florida-based internet radio station Shaq-Fu with O’Neal.

In the video, which you can watch below, O’Neal says, “I just wanted to wish Kelvin and all the Cobblers the best of luck for the rest of the season. First place is where I like to be and it’s great to see you guys at the top.

“I know what it takes to win championships and you’ve gotta make sure you finish strong and you do not give up that intensity. I’m looking forward to coming to Sixfields at some point to see a match.

“You guys know what you need to do and I hope you guys keep listening to Shaq Fu Radio. Keep grinding guys, I know you’re going to be the champs, love you guys, bye bye.
