Northampton Town were beaten 3-0 at home by Scunthorpe United as they endured a second loss in a week to the Lincolnshire side.
Having lost 1-0 to Scunthorpe in the FA Cup replay in midweek, there was further misery against the Iron for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side, who also lost midfielder John-Joe O’Toole to injury.
The Cobblers had entered the contest on the back of three consecutive wins in League One, but after an even first half where both sides missed chances, the home side capitulated in the second half.
Northampton’s best chance saw Matt Crooks head inches wide while Scunthorpe had created a great chance late in the first half as David Buchanan blocked Holmes on the line with Matt Ingram beaten.
But the visitors opened the scoring 11 minutes after half-time when Cameron Burgess turned in a low cross from Hakeeb Adelakun.
Abdelakun scored a high quality solo goal to decide the midweek FA Cup tie, and less than two minutes after the opener, he bagged his second assist of the day as his through-ball released Duane Holmes, who duly lobbed the home goalkeeper.
Holmes duly rounded off a miserable after the hosts just under 20 minutes later, as he rounded Ingram and finished.
With Gillingham beating Walsall, Northampton slip back into the relegation zone ahead of big games against fellow early strugglers Plymouth and Bury.
