Cobblers take point after draw with Scunthorpe
Northampton Town picked up a further point towards their survival bid as they drew 2-2 with Scunthorpe United.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side had taken the lead twice courtesy of strikes from Chris Long and John-Joe O’Toole. But they were unable to hold out in either instance to preserve three points, with Funso Ojo and Murray Wallace equalising for the play-off chasing hosts.
Nevertheless, the Cobblers were able to hold out for a point, which continues their unbeaten run away from home and sees them establish a point gap on the relegation zone.
Northampton took the lead just before the quarter of an hour mark, as Long bundled the ball in at a free-kick after Matt Crooks’ initial header had hit a defender.
Scunthorpe applied pressure after and a solo strike from Ojo was the home side’s breakthrough, as the midfielder was allowed to make a forward run before striking home from outside the area.
A tight game saw few chances land on target, but just before the hour, O’Toole headed in Matt Grimes’ corner to put Northampton back in front.
Scunthorpe equalised with just under 15 minutes remaining through Wallace, with the defender meeting a free-kick. But although the home side had chances – most notably when Richard O’Donnell denied Josh Morris – the game ultimately ended all square.
