Northampton beat Plymouth to boost survival hopes
Northampton Town boosted their chances of maintaining their League One status by beating promotion hopefuls Plymouth Argyle 2-0.
The result means back to back victories for caretaker manager Dean Austin, with his first home win confirmed through John-Joe O’Toole’s first half goal and a Zak Vyner own goal just after the hour.
The result coupled with Walsall, Oldham and Rochdale all failing to win means that the home side moved to within two points from safety with two to play.
Northampton had the majority of the opportunities in the opening period, with Sam Hoskins unable to take advantage of a smattering of decent opportunities.
But his Cobblers teammate O’Toole took one in the final minutes of the half as he turned in Daniel Powell’s cross.
Powell was then provider of Northampton’s second, when Plymouth defender Vyner turned his cross past Remi Matthews into his own net.
Matthews had denied Matt Crooks and Hoskins, and then denied Powell. But two proved enough for Northampton, who picked up back to back wins for the first time since January as they retain hopes of maintaining their third tier status.
