Northampton Town’s first game saw the Cobblers beaten 1-0 at home by Lincoln City.
Matt Green’s goal came moments into the second half, with the visiting striker heading in Neal Eardley’s cross to decide the contest.
The result means an opening day defeat for Dean Austin’s side on their return to the second tier, although the home side did see opportunities.
The Cobblers had opportunities during the opening half, with Daniel Powell and Sam Hoskins both seeing one-on-ones saved by visiting goalkeeper Josh Vickers.
Lincoln’s best first half effort saw Harry Toffolo hit an effort just over the top, while late in the first half, Powell was denied again.
Green struck early after the re-start to put last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists ahead. This was the cue for the visitors to control the match, although Northampton saw Hoskins and Andy Williams denied late on in their attempts to salvage a point.
The Cobblers will seek to bounce back next week, when they travel to face Carlisle United at Brunton Park.
