Northampton Town began their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a defeat, as they lost 1-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
An early strike from Scott Kashket decided the contest. The result is a second defeat in less than a month to Wycombe in a cup for Northampton, after they were beaten on penalties at Adams Park in the opening round of the Carabao Cup.
Wycombe had started bright, and after Fred Onyedinma saw one shot denied by Lewis Ward, they struck inside 11 minutes. A long-range effort from Kashket crashed beyond Lewis Ward into the back of the net to open the scoring for the League 1 new-boys.
The Cobblers struggled to get back into the contest. Wycombe had further chances to extend their lead, with Alex Samuel and Paris Cowan-Hall wasting efforts to do so.
Cowan-Hall and Kashket hit further efforts off target in the second half. Northampton did probe more often after the half-time interval, but the home side were limited in their opportunities.
Billy Waters hit a long range strike wide of the mark with their best opportunity for the bulk of the half. Late on, Dean Bowditch then saw a shot cleared off the line.
But the Cobblers were unable to get the goal to force a penalty shootout, and ultimately suffered a first home defeat since the opening day as a consequence.
