Luton return to winning ways by beating Walsall
Luton Town bounced back from the disappointment of the previous weekend’s defeat to Barnsley by beating Walsall 2-0.
The result was good enough for Nathan Jones’ side to move about the Saddlers in the table, and they now sit just outside the play-offs.
A goal in each half did the trick for the hosts, with Glen Rea scoring his first goal of the season in the home side’s opener and Jorge Grant striking in the early moments of the second half.
Luton pressed early and having already gone close through Andrew Shinnie, it was Rea who broke the deadlock. The Luton captain turned the ball over the line when he a corner was flicked on in his direction.
Walsall’s best chance saw a strike from Andy Cook go wide just after the half hour mark. But before then, Luton had looked likelier to score again, with Grant seeing a strike from range denied by the visiting goalkeeper.
Grant then extended Luton’s advantage after the break. The Nottingham Forest loanee won a free-kick after he was fouled by Jon Guthrie, and from 25 yards, Grant duly dispatched the ball into the back of the net.
Luton had the better chances for more goals. Both James Collins and the returning Danny Hylton saw strikes go just wide, while James Justin hit a post and Hylton saw the rebound blocked on the line.
But in the end, Luton had enough for three points to see them move up to 7th place and just 3 points off the play-offs ahead of a midweek clash with 4th placed Accrington Stanley.
