Northampton Town drop 2 places in League Two after a 3-1 defeat away against Newport County at Rodney Parade.

A lively opener saw Andy Williams cancel out Josh Sheehan’s opener. But two goals in three minutes decided the contest in favour of the home side, as Jamille Matt and Padraig Almond registered the goals.

The defeat at Rodney Parade means Keith Curle’s side drop from 15th to 17th in the table.

The game had begun in a lively manner. Sheehan struck an opening goal inside five minutes when he curled in a fine effort.

Williams was then able to provide Northampton’s response, with the striker converting David Buchanan’s cross to grab a second in as many matches.

A lively side saw both sides press, before Newport re-took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Matt diverted the ball over the line.

Newport then came close again when they had a strike cleared off the line. But the home side would grab a further strike moments later, as Matt played in Almond, who fired the ball into the back of the net.

A poor backpass nearly let the visitors back in but Jason Day was able to recover the situation.

Northampton tried a formation reshuffle, but the away side struggled to create opportunities and were unable to avoid their defeat.
