Northampton Town began their 2019 fixture programme with a defeat after a late goal saw Forest Green Rovers win 2-1.
It had looked like proceedings would end tied after Sam Foley had cancelled out George Williams’ first half opener.
However, a goal in the 4th minute of added time from Theo Archibald won the contest for the home side.
While the win put the side from the Cotswolds into the play-off spots, Northampton remain in mid-table, with Keith Curle’s side 16th in the League Two table 12 points from the play-offs and 9 points above the drop with 20 games remaining.
Northampton made a poor start when they fell behind inside the opening 2 minutes, as Williams tapped in for Forest Green when he was found by Reece Brown.
An open first half saw both sides create and waste opportunities to score the game’s second goal. For Northampton, it saw Sam Hoskins have a header saved, Foley waste the rebound, and Matt Crooks have an effort saved, while Williams saw an effort go just wide for the home team.
Foley equalised shortly after half-time, with the Cobblers man turning in Jordan Turnbull’s delivery.
Crooks would see a free-kick palmed away as Northampton looked to take the lead, before Forest Green Rovers saw quickfire saves from David Cornell deny Paul Digby and Williams, while Dayle Grubb saw an effort strike a post.
It looked as though the game was set to end in stalemate, but in the final depths of added time, Archibald fizzed an effort through the gloves of David Cornell and in to win the game for the home side and condemn the Cobblers to defeat in their opening fixture of 2019.
