MK Dons sign defender Russell Martin
MK Dons have confirmed the signing of Scotland international defender Russell Martin after the player left League One Walsall.
Martin, 33, is the club’s first January signing and joins after he left the West Midlands club.
The move adds defensive strength for the Dons, in the form of a player who played Premier League football for Norwich City, and who has represented the Scotland team at international level.
Martin told iFollow MK Dons, “I’m delighted to be here. I’m looking forward to being part of the team and part of the project that the manager is building as well as, of course, helping the Club get back to where it belongs.
“I spoke to the manager a few times and I loved what I heard. We’ve got a good squad here and hopefully I can come here and add a bit of value.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have enjoyed success during my career and I want more. Hopefully I can play my part in bringing that to the Club.”
The defender began his career with his hometown club Brighton, but made his senior debut for Wycombe. From there, he joined Peterborough United, who he helped to promotion to the Championship.
Martin joined Norwich from Peterborough when the Canaries were in League One. He was a key player as the East Anglians earned back to back promotions to the Premier League, and was installed as club captain in 2013-14 when Norwich bounced back from relegation to earn an instant return to the top flight.
Martin left Norwich in 2018, having spent the final half of the 2017-18 season on loan with Rangers. The defender played over 300 times for the side from Norfolk. After leaving Norwich, he joined Walsall, but has now made the move to Buckinghamshire.
Martin qualified for selection by the Scottish team through his father, and was called up for the first time in 2011. He has made 29 competitive appearances for the side.
