Northampton Town extended their unbeaten run to 7 games as they beat Newport County 1-0.

Substitute Joe Powell scored to decide a contest that had looked to be drifting towards a goalless draw, with Powell striking a goal that maintains a strong run from Keith Curle’s side.

The Cobblers now sit 11th in the League 2 table, with a six point deficit to the play-offs.

The result against the Exiles also made it back-to-back home wins for Northampton, who beat Exeter 2-1 in their previous assignment.

A lively first half saw both sides create opportunities, with Joe Day in the Newport goal denying Daniel Powell, while Newport’s Jamille Matt struck the bar and Padraig Amond had a shot blocked.

Northampton rallied near the end of the half, with Andy Williams having a volley tipped over, and Powell having one blocked on the line.

Newport had opportunities during the second period but couldn’t take them, with Matt firing over from close range.

As the game headed towards the 90 minute mark, it looked as if they would be no score. But then right at the end, a fine 30 yard strike from Powell cannoned in via the bar to win the game for Northampton and maintain their dash for the finish line.
