Northampton Town have confirmed the signing of Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Steve Arnold for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old keeper has signed a 2 year contract after moving from the League One side to the PTS Academy Stadium.

Arnold was the third signing to be confirmed yesterday, following the arrivals of Nicky Adams and Alan McCormack.

The goalkeeper joined Shrewsbury from non-league Barrow at the end of the 2017-18 season, having previously turned out for Grays, Eastleigh, Hayes & Yeading United, Stevenage, Forest Green Rovers, Dover and Gillingham.

Manager Keith Curle told the official Northampton website of his delight to secure additional competition for goalkeeper David Cornell.

He said, “Our squad needs a number of very important elements next season, with competition for places and having the right characters in the dressing room vital, and Steve ticks both boxes.

“David Cornell did very well for us last season but you need competition for places all over the pitch, including in goal and David and Steve will challenge each other and compete with each other each week for that starting place to bring the best out of each other.

“Steve is a good size, he is strong and he is a presence. He is a good organiser, a good talker and he is very ambitious.”
