Late own goal sees Luton beaten by Leeds United
Luton Town lost out to Leeds United after a late own goal saw the Yorkshire side win 2-1 at Kenilworth Road.
The game had been tightly poised as it entered the late stages, as an equaliser by James Collins cancelled out Patrick Bamford’s opener.
But a late own goal by Matty Pearson was enough for Leeds to win, as the side from West Yorkshire moved into second place. Pearson had earlier had a goal disallowed.
Defeat meanwhile was Luton’s fifth consecutive in the Championship. The side are still out of the relegation zone, but are only out of the drop zone on goal difference after Stoke beat Wigan.
Luton had a few half-chances go close in the opening half hour, with perhaps the best headed wide by Sonny Bradley. Leeds then began to escalate their involvement, with Bamford striking a post and home keeper James Shea making a double save to deny Kalvin Phillips and Jack Harrison.
Leeds went in front just after half-time. With Luton unhappy at a potential challenge on Izzy Brown, Bamford beat Shea and put Leeds ahead.
But Luton weren’t behind for long, as Collins ended a recent goal drought when he headed in Brown’s cross.
Things could’ve been even better for Luton, as Pearson headed in only to be ruled offside.
A high intensity second half was ultimately settled in Leeds’ favour, as a touch from Pearson diverted a Mateusz Klich cross into the back of the net.
Luton could still have swiped a point at the end, when Dan Potts headed over with the very last touch as the Hatters ran out of time to prevent another loss.
