MK Dons have been drawn away against Newport County in the Trophy Third Round.

The Dons’ trip to South Wales is the team’s prize for defeating Coventry in Round Two, with Russell Martin’s side beating the Sky Blues on Tuesday.

An exact date for the tie in South Wales is yet to be announced, but it is expected to be announced in due course.

Newport booked their place into the Third Round of the competition by beating the Brighton U21s on penalties after a goalless draw at the Premier League side’s AMEX Stadium. The Exiles had previously finished second in a group also containing Exeter City, the West Ham U21s and Cheltenham Town.

MK Dons are in the competition’s third round for the first time since the 2009-10 season, when they lost to Southampton in the regional final and missed out on a trip to Wembley.

In each season entered since that campaign, the Dons have progressed no further than the second knockout round, both when the competition was run as a knockout tournament without B teams were introduced and after the tournament was changed in 2016-17.
