Late show sees Luton come from behind to beat Wigan
Two goals in the final stages saw Luton Town beat Wigan Athletic in a big game at the bottom of the Championship.
Kieffer Moore put Wigan in front just after the half-hour mark, and it looked as though the side from the North West were set to take victory at Kenilworth Road.
But a Luton side who conceded seven in defeat at Brentford last weekend would equalise late on through ex-Latic Callum McManaman.
Wigan’s Chey Dunkley would then be sent off in the first minute of stoppage time, and two minutes after that, substitute George Moncur completed the final act of the game, and ensured a much-needed win for Graeme Jones’ Hatters.
Luton would have been jumped in the table by Wigan had the away side held out. But as it was, victory instead sees Luton open up a 4 point gap on the Latics in the Championship table, as they also move up a place to 20th after Huddersfield lost to Leeds in the day’s lunchtime kick-off.
Luton wasted early chances as Graham Shinnie and Ryan Tunnicliffe came close, and from there Wigan grew into the contest. The visitors took the lead on 35 minutes, as Moore headed in Dujon Sterling’s cross.
Moore put another Sterling cross wide not long after with Wigan’s best chance to extend their lead, although their goal would ultimately be registered as their only shot on target of the afternoon.
Luton had more chances after the break, with Luke Berry, Tunnicliffe and McManaman among those frustrated.
But Luton snuck an equaliser with 3 minutes of normal time left on the clock. McManaman bundled the ball over the line at the second attempt from a corner.
From there, Luton pressed in hope of a winner. Their cause looked to have been aided when Dunkley was booked for a second time after a foul on Harry Cornick. That yielded the game winner, as Moncur swept home a free-kick.
