One late goal enough for Luton to lose at home to Swansea
Luton Town were beaten 1-0 at home by Swansea City in their final game before Christmas after conceding late on.
Andre Ayew’s goal with 8 minutes of normal time remaining decided the contest. The game’s only goal was enough to condemn the Hatters to a 10th defeat from 13 matches.
Defeat to the South Welsh side means the Hatters will spend Christmas Day one point and one place above the relegation zone, ahead of a Boxing Day meeting with a Fulham side in the top 3.
The first half at Kenilworth Road was a lively and open contest. Luton’s best chances saw George Byers block Harry Cornick and Andrew Shinnie denied by Freddie Woodman, while the best chances for the visitors saw Ayew hit the side-netting and Borja Baston hit an overhead kick wide.
Despite the open nature, the first half remained goalless, and the second period.
Luton’s best second half opportunity saw George Moncur denied shooting room after Harry Cornick rounded Woodman and set up the sub.
Swansea however had the better chances after the break, with Ayew, Byers and Bersant Celina all coming close for the former Premier League side.
The winning moment came late on, when Jay Fulton’s deflected cross found Ayew in space, and the Ghanaian international chested the ball into the net.
Swansea then repelled Luton efforts at a comeback to take the points, moving them into the top 6 and condemning Luton to a further reverse.
