Milton Keynes Council have announced plans to light the Civic office building in the city centre purple tonight (02/06) as a tribute to George Floyd.

The tribute to Floyd comes on a day where many people have Tweeted support for Black Lives Matter and Blackout Tuesday, as well as spreading support for a number of causes.

Floyd, 46, died in the American city of Minneapolis last week after being arrested by police. Video leaked of Floyd’s arrest showed an arresting officer placing his knee on Floyd’s neck, while two separate autopsy reports have reported his death as a homicide. All 4 officers involved in the arrest have been sacked by local police, with the officer in the video officially charged with murder.

The incident has lead to a wave of protests across the USA and beyond, with reports of protests in all 50 states in the US, as well as in London and other locations outside of the United States.

In a statement released on Twitter, the council said, “Milton Keynes Council will stand in solidarity with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities around the world this evening, as it lights the Civic building purple to remember George Floyd and stand up for justice. #BlackOutTuesday”
