Luton Town will be in the second round of the Carabao Cup after James Collins scored a hat-trick in the final minutes in a win over Norwich City.

All of the game’s 4 goals in the Hatters’ 3-1 win came in the final stages, with Collins’ opener coming in the 78th minute of football.

A Norwich squad missing 15 players due to international call-ups did equalise through debutant Kieran Dowell, but two more goals by Collins in the closing stages put Luton into Round Two at the expense of the side relegated from last season’s Premier League.

The low tempo first half saw Luton’s best chance fired wide by Elliott Lee, and Norwich’s best one saw Lukas Rupp denied by the Luton keeper James Shea.

Shea would then be tested after the break, making two good saves to deny Alex Tettey and Marco Stiepermann, while Jordan Hugill narrowly missed a cross.

But with Norwich not breaking through, a great chance opened up for Luton to do so as Mario Vrancic was penalised for fouling Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, and Collins rolled in the spot kick.

Norwich would equalise within two minutes, as Dowell was first to a loose ball and hit a shot from 20 yards past Shea.

But Luton would retake the lead very quickly, as Collins was found by Mpanzu’s knockdown from Jordan Clark’s cross and he lashed it home.

Collins would then wrap things up in added time and in the process grab his 4th Luton Town hat-trick when the Irishman received Clark’s pull-back and drilled it into the bottom corner.

It means a winning start to the first competitive game of 2020-21 for Nathan Jones’ Hatters, and a place in the second round draw.
