Northampton Town registered a 3-0 over Championship side Cardiff City to progress to Round 2 of the Carabao Cup.
Harry Smith, Matty Warburton and Ryan Watson were the scorers as Keith Curle’s side marked their first competitive game since winning the League Two play-off final by beating the second tier Bluebirds.
It means a place in Round 2 of the competition for Curle’s side as they seek to build on last season’s triumph at Wembley.
Northampton’s starting eleven featured 6 debutants, but they did show signs of early gelling when they saw Watson and Warburton come close early on.
The opening goal would come from the penalty spot. Joseph Mills was fouled by Jordi Osei-Tutu, and from 12 yards, Smith beat Alex Smithies in the Cardiff goal.
Robert Glatzel would hit the bar with a free header at a free-kick moments later, with Smith coming close again before the break.
Northampton’s second goal would turn up four minutes into the second half, as Warburton received a through-pass and put the ball into the back of the net.
The Cobblers’ third effort that would seal the victory would arrive ten minutes later, as Watson sent a crisp effort past Smithies.
