James Collins scored the only goal as Luton Town beat Barnsley at Oakwell on the Championship’s opening day.
The Irish striker’s goal inside the game’s final 20 minutes was the only one of a game of a few chances in Yorkshire, as Nathan Jones’ side won at the same place where they got their first Championship win of last season.
A low quality game saw only 2 chances on target across the entire 90 minutes, as two sides who only secured survival by winning their final games of the season struggled to impress on the first day of the new season.
Luton’s winner came with 19 minutes left to play, as Collins received a flick-on by Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, controlled the ball, and rifled a crisp strike past Barnsley goalkeeper Jack Walton.
It was a fourth goal in the opening week of the season for Collins, following on from his hat-trick in Luton’s win over Norwich in the Carabao Cup last week.
Dominik Frieser headed a cross wide moments later, and with the home side unable to find a breakthrough after that, it allowed Luton to win.
The Hatters’ season continues with an EFL Cup tie at Reading on Tuesday, before their first home league game of 2020-21 sees them welcome Derby County to Kenilworth Road.
