Luton Town will play Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Third Round after a 1-0 win over fellow Championship side Reading.

A single goal by Jordan Clark was enough for the Hatters to beat the Royals at the Madejski Stadium, and in the process see Luton book their place in Round 3.

Victory in Berkshire means Luton have now won all 3 games so far in 2020-21, as Nathan Jones’ side continue a bright start.

While the pre-draw for the Third Round provided the incentive of a home tie against the Premier League giants to be held next week, both sides chose to make lots of changes.

Luton made 9 alterations to the team that beat Barnsley in their league opener, while the hosts Reading swapped all 11 players from their win at Derby on matchday one.

The game’s only goal would come in the 24th minute, as Clark reached a cross by his fellow summer signing Rhys Norrington-Davies and headed it past Reading goalkeeper Luke Southwood.

Luton did apply pressure in the opening stages, with Southwood also denying Tom Lockyer, Danny Hylton and Sonny Bradley before Clark’s opener.

Hylton would be dangerous but missed a couple of decent headers, as the Hatters were unable to make the most of chances for a second.

Reading’s best chances would come in the final 20 minutes, with Sam Baldock denied by James Shea and Tom Holmes having a header blocked.

Luton duly held out, knocking out the Royals and booking their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup, and with it next week’s big ticket tie against Manchester United.
