Northampton out of Carabao Cup after conceding four at Bristol City
Northampton Town are out of the Carabao Cup after a 4-0 defeat by Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Chris Martin, a Kasey Palmer double and Antoine Semenyo scored the goals as a Robins side who’d made 9 changes from their weekend game brushed the Cobblers aside.
The result means an exit from the competition for Keith Curle’s side, who suffer defeat away from home in a knockout cup for the second week in a row after being beaten by MK Dons in the EFL Trophy last week.
Northampton made four changes, including a debut for academy youngster Caleb Chukwuemeka, and did hold their own in a cagey first half.
But the home side would move in front in the final stages of the opening half, as Martin turned the ball over the line.
Straight after half-time, Palmer placed a finish into the back of the net after a late run into the box to double the home side’s lead.
Bristol City would have a third goal disallowed for offside when Palmer strayed before making a header, but moments after Chukwuemeka missed a try for the away side, Northampton fell 3-0 down anyway, as Semenyo turned the ball in at the second attempt.
Palmer then grabbed a second goal in the final few minutes of the contest to rubber stamp progress for the Robins and condemn the Cobblers to a second round exit from this competition.
