Luton Town suffered defeat in their first meeting with local rivals Watford since 2006.
The Hatters suffered a 1-0 defeat at Vicarage Road, with Brazilian striker Joao Pedro marking his 19th birthday by grabbing the only goal.
Watford’s winning goal came less than a minute after James Collins hit the crossbar, but after that, Nathan Jones’ side struggled to create chances to equalise as they fell to defeat to a side relegated from last season’s Premier League.
The result means Watford won out in a battle of 2 sides that were still unbeaten at kick-off, with Luton suffering a first league defeat in 8 games stretching back to last season, and a second in a week after their midweek defeat by Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Pedro had an early shot saved by Simon Sluga, before a great chance opened up for Luton when Collins struck the bar from six yards out after being found by Cornick.
Within one minute of Luton missing a great chance to move ahead, Watford punished the Hatters for it, as Pedro’s effort took a deflection off Sonny Bradley and beat Sluga.
Collins hit a shot over in the final minutes of the half, if shortly after James Garner had been denied and Pedro had a shot blocked.
The second half’s best chance saw Tom Dele-Bashiru denied by Hatters keeper Sluga, as the derby played a quieter second period as perhaps hoped for.
In the end, there were no more goals as the Hatters fall to their first league defeat of the 2020-21 season.
