Northampton Town picked up their first win in the season’s EFL Trophy after a 5-0 success against the Southampton U23s.

Joseph Mills, Mark Marshall, a Benny Ashley-Seal double and substitute Caleb Chukwuemeka did the honours, as the League One side picked up victory in the second of their 2 group stages games.

The result sets up a group stage decider between Northampton and Stevenage at the PTS Academy Stadium next month for the chance to follow MK Dons, who have already qualified for the knockout stages. Northampton begin ahead on goal difference from the League 2 side.

The game kicked off late as a very wet pitch had to be drained pre-game, but Mills rifled home a free-kick to put Northampton ahead in the early stages to show no signs of rustiness.

After both sides created and spurned chances across the first half, a long range strike by Marshall put Northampton 2-0 ahead in the final moments of the first half.

It would be 3-0 within a minute of the second half starting, as Ashley-Seal was able to fire a low shot under the Saints keeper when in space and in the process grab his first Cobblers goal.

Half-time substitute Chukwuemeka would make it 4-0 just a few minutes later as he struck a shot into the bottom corner for his first Northampton goal, and Ashley-Seal added a fifth and Northampton’s final goal with 58 minutes played.
