Luton Town picked up a first win in 3 games as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Hillsborough.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu scored the game’s only goal with 16 minutes of normal time to go, moments after home defender Joost van Aken had been sent off for a foul on Mpanzu.

The goal was enough for Luton to take the points against a Wednesday side that are still on negative points after their 12 point deduction over the summer, and saw a positive reaction for Nathan Jones’ side after they were defeated by Stoke and Millwall in the preceding week.

Luton could’ve taken the lead straight away at Hillsborough, with Aden Flint clearing a shot from Danny Hylton off the line inside the opening 20 seconds.

A lively and even first half saw Wednesday come close when Elias Kachunga was denied by Simon Sluga and van Aken headed over, while Tom Lockyer and Hylton put their own strikes off target.

A great chance came for Mpanzu, who was sent through by Elliott Lee only to fire wide when one-on-one with Cameron Dawson.

Sluga made an important double save to deny van Aken and Callum Paterson after the break, before Flint had an effort disallowed for a foul.

The game’s balance was then tilted in Luton’s favour when they saw Wednesday reduced to 10 men and then scored within a 3 minute period.

The first moment saw van Aken dismissed for a high challenge on Mpanzu, which saw the home defender dismissed.

3 minutes after that, Mpanzu put the Hatters in front, with the Luton player first to a half-cleared cross, at which point he controlled the ball and lashed it past Dawson.

Rhys Norrington-Davies and Ryan Tunnicliffe struck the woodwork in the final stages of the contest, but one would be enough as Luton secured the points.
