Luton close out 2020 by seeing off Bristol City
Luton Town ended 2020 by beating Bristol City 2-1 to end a recent winless run.
Nathan Jones’ side hadn’t won any of their preceding 3 games in the Championship, but they bounced back from a Boxing Day defeat by Reading to see off the Robins.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was the matchwinner at Kenilworth Road, with the Leicester loanee scoring the winner moments after Glen Rea’s opening goal had been cancelled out by a Sonny Bradley own goal.
The result means Luton end the year 13th in the Championship table after 22 matches, with the Bedfordshire club 6 points off the play-offs and 14 points above the relegation zone.
A Luton side featuring six changes from their last game would take the lead inside the opening 16 minutes. Rea would provide the scoring touch, with the defender receiving Dewsbury-Hall’s corner and volleying it past Dan Bentley.
Bristol City would have the better chances to grab the game’s next goal, as Antoine Semenyo forced a save from Simon Sluga before Chris Martin saw a header crash off the bar.
Luton could’ve made it 2-0 when James Collins was played through one-on-one with Bentley only to be denied by the goalkeeper, and not long after that, the away side would equalise.
It was the unfortunate Bradley who brought the away side level, when the Luton defender got a touch on Nakhi Wells’ cross only to divert it into his own net.
But Luton would restore their lead 8 minutes later, when Dewsbury-Hall intercepted a low pass and smashed a 25 yard hit into the bottom corner.
Luton could’ve made life even better when a strike by Rhys Norrington-Davies just flew wide, but the home side saw the result over the line as they rebuffed away side attempts to equalise and saw victory over the line.
The Hatters will seek to pick up further points at the start of 2021, which they will begin on January 2nd by taking on QPR at home.
