Northampton fall to bottom spot in League One after Swindon comeback
Northampton Town fell to bottom spot in League One after a 2-1 defeat at relegation rivals Swindon Town, despite scoring first.
Ryan Watson had put Northampton in front but Scott Twine equalised in first half stoppage time for the home side before Brett Pitman’s second half the winner.
The Cobblers’ winless run now stands at 11 matches, and with Burton Albion winning at Rochdale, it means that Northampton now occupy last place in the third tier table, although they are only 2 points off safety.
Northampton suffered a blow when Alan Sheehan was forced off through injury, but less than two minutes after losing him, the away side had the lead. Peter Kioso’s cross eventually fell kindly for Watson, who drilled the ball home.
The away side could’ve doubled their lead when Mickel Miller fired wide before Sam Hoskins then saw a strike saved by Archie Matthews.
Swindon’s best chance for a first half equaliser had been a long ranger by Twine, but the same player would grab a leveller right at the end of added time. A foul by Lloyd Jones allowed Twine to step-up and drill a free-kick beyond Jonathan Mitchell.
Northampton could’ve restored their lead early in the second period. Hoskins had a strike blocked by Paul Caddis, goalkeeper Matthews denied Miller with covering Swindon defenders blocking a rebound, and the home keeper then also denied Ryan Edomondson.
But with just over 20 minutes to play, Swindon had the second goal. Northampton defensively switched off, and it allowed Pitman to reach and convert Jordon Garrick’s cross.
Twine had a curling strike denied by Mitchell late on, but Northampton struggled to create chances to equalise and despite there being six extra minutes, the visitors ultimately saw all hopes of a point slip away.
