Luton Town will start the 2021/22 season with a home clash with Peterborough United at Kenilworth Road.

The club’s third season back in the Championship will see them kick off against a side promoted from last season’s League One on the weekend around Saturday August 7th 2021. It’s the second time in the three campaigns they’ve started at home, having begun their return to the second tier in 2019 at home to Middlesbrough.

A busy opening month will see Luton’s first away match take them to face recently relegated West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. The trip to the West Midlands is the first of back-to-back away contests, with the second being at Barnsley – the place where Luton began their fixtures last season. August then rounds off with back-to-back home clashes with Birmingham City and Sheffield United.

The EFL preceded the fixture announcement by declaring they were producing fixtures with the option to switch around Derby County and Wycombe Wanderers.

In an announcement late last night (23/06), the EFL announced the fixture list would have the option to swap around the two teams that finished either side of last season’s Championship relegation zone. An investigation has fined Derby £100,000 and ordered them to re-submit 3 years of accounts, but both the club and the EFL have the option to appeal. One possible option open after the appeal could see a points deduction retroactively applied to last season, which would see Derby relegated and sent into League One for 2021/22 with Wycombe staying in the second tier.

At present, Luton are scheduled to face Derby County, who finished 21st in last season’s Championship table by 1 point from Wycombe. They are due to have a midweek meeting with Derby on October 19th, before welcoming Derby to Bedfordshire on February 26th.

Luton are due to have a Boxing Day match at home this season, with the Hatters welcoming Bristol City to Kenilworth Road on December 26th. The last game of 2021 will see Luton travel to Swansea City, with New Year’s Day then seeing Luton visit Coventry City.

The last game of the 2021/22 season will see Luton at home, where they will take on Reading on May 7th 2022. The last away match is at Fulham on April 30th.

Further admin will see Luton’s Carabao Cup First Round draw made later today (24/06). That tie will take place between the Hatters’ opening fixtures of the season.
