MK Dons’ opening game of the 2021/22 League One season will see the team travel to face Bolton Wanderers.

On the EFL’s fixture release day, the Dons’ opening game of the season on August 7th is a trip to the University of Bolton Stadium, to face one of the teams promoted from last season’s League Two.

MK Dons’ opening home game of the new season will be against Sunderland on August 14th. It’ll be one of two home games in a row, with the team then hosting Charlton Athletic 3 days later.

A busy opening month also sees MK Dons travel to face Ipswich Town on August 21st, before rounding things off with a match against Accrington Stanley on August 28th.

The season is reverting to it’s traditional August-May calendar, after the 2020/21 season started in September following the coronavirus-induced suspension of football in March, the late end to the Championship campaign and the early cancellation of the League One season.

The EFL preceded the fixture announcement by declaring they were producing fixtures with the option to switch around Derby County and Wycombe Wanderers.

In an announcement late last night (23/06), the EFL announced the fixture list would have the option to swap around the two teams that finished either side of last season’s Championship relegation zone. An investigation has fined Derby £100,000 and ordered them to re-submit 3 years of accounts, but both the club and the EFL have the option to appeal. One possible option open after the appeal could see a points deduction retroactively applied to last season, which would see Derby relegated and sent into League One for 2021/22.

The Dons are currently scheduled to be facing Wycombe after the Chairboys finished 22nd in last season’s Championship. They are facing them at stadium mk on September 25th with a return fixture at Adams Park on January 29th, which is over an international break weekend.

MK Dons are also due to face Wycombe in the Papa John’s Trophy. Ahead of the full draw of invited academy teams later today (24/06), MK Dons have been assigned to a group featuring Wycombe and Burton Albion.

For the league, MK Dons’ last game of the season is away at Plymouth Argyle on the weekend of Saturday April 30th. The last home match is against Morecambe the week before.

The Dons’ Easter games are the week before that, with the game hosting Sheffield Wednesday on Good Friday (April 15th) before an Easter Monday trip to Oxford (April 18th).

Over the Christmas period, the Dons are away on Boxing Day, where they will face Lincoln City. Their last home game before Christmas is on December 11th against Oxford, while they are also at home in their last match of 2021. That game will see them host Cheltenham Town, before a New Year’s Day meeting with Gillingham.

The Dons’ rival matches with AFC Wimbledon will see the home match in Milton Keynes played first on October 9th, with the reverse fixture in South West London on April 9th.

Further admin will see the Dons’ Carabao Cup First Round draw and the completion of the Papa John’s Trophy group stage draw, which are taking place later today (24/06).
