Northampton Town’s pre-season continued with a 2-1 defeat to non-league side Stamford AFC.

On a hot Saturday afternoon in Lincolnshire, a Cobblers side missing players due to self-isolation requirements fell 2-0 down in the first half, after goals by Cameron Johnson and James Blunden.

Benny Ashley-Seal did reduce the deficit with a lobbed finish, but the Cobblers were unable to equalise against a side from the 8th tier of English football.

In the early stages, Paul Lewis saw a strike saved, but it was Stamford that got the opening goal after Johnson evaded the Northampton defence before beating Jonny Maxted.

Maxted then denied a deflected strike from Rodrigo Goncalves, and after Northampton had a couple of shots without being able to find the net, Stamford scored the second goal.

That came from Blunden, who was able to head in a free-kick to put Stamford 2-0 in front with four minutes of normal time remaining.

Northampton would grab a goal back ten minutes after the break, when Ashley-Seal received a long ball before lobbing the Stamford goalkeeper to get the ball into the goal.

Dylan Connolly had a goal offside, but Northampton struggled to create opportunities in the sunshine and ended the afternoon with a defeat.

Northampton’s pre-season continues on Tuesday, as the Cobblers welcome Championship side Nottingham Forest to the PTS Academy Stadium.
