Luton Town’s pre-season ended with a 3-1 defeat at home by Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Seagulls moved 2-0 up through goals by Aaron Connolly and Enock Mwepu.
Nathan Jones’ side did grab a goal back through Harry Cornick, but a third Brighton goal scored by Percy Tau confirmed victory for the top flight team.
Luton had started brightly in a clash that saw Jones come up against a club he had previously worked for as a coach. They had an early chance through Cornick, who saw a strike kept out by Robert Sanchez.
But Brighton would grab the game’s opening goal shortly after. One-time Luton loanee Connolly reached Adam Lallana’s through pass, before threading a shot past Simon Sluga.
Brighton largely held control after that but Luton nearly managed a breakthrough in response, when Cornick saw a header blocked by Sanchez’s legs.
Having made it through that, it would be the away side with the game’s second goal. Solly March’s cross picked out Mwepu, who was able to beat Sluga first time.
Luton would grab a goal back shortly before half-time. A poor pass by Dan Burn was intercepted by Cornick, who duly advanced and beat Sanchez.
The home side nearly continued their momentum after the break. Half-time substitute Jordan Clark forced a save from Sanchez, with Cornick’s rebound blocked.
Although Luton had started the half well, it was Brighton who would grab the match’s next goal. After appeals for a foul on home player Kal Naismith were waved away, Brighton advanced through Tau, as the South African striker evaded two defenders before threading the ball home.
That would be the end of the scoring, despite a few scattered half-chances popping up in the remainng stages.
The result ends Luton’s pre-season, and their attention now turns to next weekend, as they open up their third consecutive Championship season at home to new boys Peterborough United.
