Northampton Town began the Papa John’s Trophy by beating Forest Green Rovers on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
After Josh March and Scott Pollock exchanged goals during the 90 minutes, Northampton would win the eventual shootout 4-2.
That penalties victory hands Northampton the bonus point in the group stages, with the team grabbing the bonus second point.
The Cobblers named a reshuffled starting line-up ahead of taking on Forest Green Rovers, who are currently top of the League Two table.
It was the home side who made most of the early running, and it was Forest Green Rovers who scored first, when Jack Evans played in March, who shot past Jonny Maxted via a deflection off Michael Harriman.
While Forest Green did apply pressure after this, Northampton did have decent chances to equalise with Nicke Kabamba and Jack Sowerby both having shots denied by Lewis Thomas.
Forest Green Rovers thought they had gone 2-0 up in the early minutes of the second half, but an offside flag denied the home side.
Northampton responded by equalising moments later. Sam Hoskins picked out Pollock, who headed into the back of the net.
The away side then nearly grabbed a quickfire second, as Thomas thwarted Kabamba.
Forest Green would have the better chances after that, however, with Ebou Adams firing wide, and Jonny Maxted keeping out attempts by Jamille Matt and substitute Matty Stevens.
With the game level after 90 minutes, penalties were required for the bonus point. Forest Green Rovers’ Jack Evans missed his kick while Maxted saved from Matt, and although Northampton’s Shaun McWilliams also failed to score, Pollock scored Northampton’s final kick to win the shootout 4-2.
The other two teams in the group are Walsall and the Brighton U21 team, though their first meeting will be held on September 14th.
Northampton next take part in an Papa John’s Trophy match on October 5th, when they host Walsall.
