Northampton Town were beaten 1-0 by Forest Green Rovers as the team suffered a first away defeat of the season at League 2’s early leaders.

Jamille Matt’s goal in the final 15 minutes was the only one of the contest. It meant League 2’s top scorers inflicted a reverse for Jon Brady’s team after having been previously denied by some spirited defensive work, and the team suffered a first loss away from home.

Northampton had won on penalties on a visit to Forest Green Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy in late August. But the club’s preparations for this one received a blow with defender Sid Nelson suffering a knee ligament injury in training.

One of the best opportunities of a cagey first half saw Nicky Cadden’s cross/shot tipped away by Northampton goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Jordan Flores had an effort blocked, and within seconds, Northampton nearly fell behind, as Roberts pulled off a stop from Matty Stevens at the end of the counter.

Roberts was then called upon again in a busier second half as the Northampton goalkeeper made a flying stop to keep out Jack Aitchison.

The Northampton keeper then made another stop to keep out Kane Wilson, before a flying clearance by Aaron McGowan stopped Matt’s rebound from crossing the line.

But it was Forest Green Rovers who would score the game’s first goal after 77 minutes. Matt was picked out by Cadden, and beat Roberts to put the home side in front.

Northampton’s best chance for an equaliser saw Nicke Kabamba denied by home goalkeeper Luke McGee moments after coming on as a sub, but the Cobblers were unable to force in an equaliser and the home side registered the victory.
