Former MK Dons star George Williams featured as Cambridge United surprised Newcastle in the FA Cup 3rd Round.
The 28-year-old played the full 90 minutes for Cambridge, as they beat the Premier League side 1-0 at St. James’ Park.
Cambridge managed the victory after a goal from Joe Ironside, which came in the 57th minute on Tyneside, with the final result sparking wild celebrations among nearly 5,000 Cambridge fans who made the trip to the North East.
The side from the Abbey Stadium had booked their place in Round 3 by beating Northampton Town and Exeter City in previous rounds, while they will face a home contest with Championship side Luton Town in the next stage.
Williams took to social media to celebrate in the win. He said, “I love this team!!!!! What an incredible day. I can’t put into words how good that was. The fans were unbelievable!! UP THE U’s!!”, with former MK Dons teammates such as Baily Cargill, George Baldock and Robbie Simpson among those to offer congratulations on Instagram.
After initially being released by MK Dons at academy level, Williams re-joined the club in 2016, winning the Dons’ Player of the Year prize in the 2016-17 season.
Williams made 174 appearances in all competitions upon his return to the Dons, scoring four times, before leaving to join Bristol Rovers in January 2021. He then joined Cambridge after Bristol Rovers’ relegation to League 2 at the end of last season, making 30 appearances so far in all competitions, including against MK Dons at stadium mk in mid-November.
