Brackley Town’s promotion hopes ended as York City win play-off
Brackley Town were beaten 1-0 at home by York City in the play-offs as their hopes of promotion were over.
Lennell John-Lewis decided the contest in York’s favour, with James Armson seeing a first half penalty saved.
The home side had opportunities before and after York’s goal, but were unable to take advantage as they slipped to a defeat that confirms another season in the National League North.
Having finished second to Gateshead in the 6th tier’s promotion race, Brackley faced a play-off against the winner of a tie between 5th and 6th, which saw York City defeat Chorley 2-1 earlier this week.
At St James’ Park, Brackley started brightly, with Shep Murombedzi and Lee Ndlovu missing early chances.
The home side had a few further opportunities but couldn’t force through an opening goal, and instead, York struck first just before half-time. John-Lewis was the man on hand for York, who turned in the rebound after an initial shot had been saved.
Brackley were awarded a penalty in first half injury time after Max Lowe was fouled, but Peter Jameson denied Armson’s penalty.
The second half saw chances at more of a premium compared to the first half, though Brackley would come close after Jameson denied Lowe.
But York ground out victory in the Northamptonshire sunshine to book their place in the play-off final, while Brackley were left to ponder what might have been.
York will face AFC Fylde or Boston United in a single leg play-off next week for a place in the National League next season.
