Left-sided player Ryan Haynes will join Northampton Town after leaving Newport County.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Northamptonshire and raised in Daventry, has signed a two year contract with the Cobblers.

His arrival was Northampton’s second confirmed signing of the summer 2022 transfer window, confirmed after the signing of Ben Fox but before the signing of Danny Hylton earlier today (21/06).

Haynes began his career with Coventry City, making almost 100 appearances for the Sky Blues before leaving for Shrewsbury on an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2018. After one year with the Shrews, he then joined Newport, where he stayed for 3 years and made over 120 appearances, including being a regular as they made the play-off final in 2021.

Northampton Town manager Jon Brady told the club’s official website that Haynes fit the template they were seeking to sign to build on last season’s promotion near-miss.

He said, “Ryan is a good age with over 250 senior games already under his belt and he has a lot of experience for a player in his mid twenties.

“He will come in to give us depth and competition in the left back position where he will compete with Ali Koiki for the shirt or he can also play further forward on the left hand side.

“Our own scouting of Ryan, the reports we have on him and his background and character are all positive and I am pleased we have been able to tie this signing up as he is someone who fits our template.

“He did have offers from League 1 and it is a credit to the club that we have been able to secure his signing.

“He is Northamptonshire born so he knows all about the club and our ambitions and we are delighted to have him on board.”
