Northampton’s group in the Papa John’s Trophy will see them play the Arsenal U21s, Ipswich Town and Cambridge United.
A pre-draw earlier this week had put the Cobblers into a group featuring League 1 sides Ipswich and Cambridge, before a follow-up draw today (23/06) added the Arsenal academy side into the mix.
The group stage games are provisionally due to take place in the weeks beginning August 29th, September 19th and October 17th 2022, with specific fixture dates and schedule running order to be confirmed in due course, along with relevant ticket details.
Under the tournament’s current rules, Northampton will have two home matches as part of this trio of games, one of which will be the match against the Arsenal juniors as they are required to play all 3 group stage games away.
Northampton finished bottom of their group in the competition last season, as despite beating Forest Green Rovers on penalties in their opener following a draw, a penalty loss to Walsall and defeat to Brighton’s U21s ended their interest in the competition early.
The group stage draw was the second of Northampton’s 2022/23 schedule to be confirmed today. Earlier on, the Cobblers’ League 2 fixtures were released, while this afternoon, the Carabao Cup draw will be held.
