Northampton Town will play Wycombe Wanderers at Sixfields in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

The Cobblers’ tie against the Chairboys in the tournament’s Southern Section will take place in the week beginning Monday August 8th, with a specific match date and ticket information to be confirmed in due course.

The home match against the League 1 side will be placed between Northampton’s League 2 matches against Grimsby Town and Hartlepool United.

Wycombe will be in the third tier of English football for a second season in 2022/23, having finished 6th last season in League 1. The side from south Buckinghamshire beat MK Dons over 2 legs but were defeated by Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Last season, Wycombe made it to Round 3 of this competition, where they were defeated by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Northampton last played Wycombe in the 2018/19 season, when the two sides met in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy competitions. Both matches were won by the Chairboys.

Northampton reached the Second Round of the Carabao Cup last season, managing an upset victory away at Championship side Coventry City only to lose at home to AFC Wimbledon in the following round.

The Cobblers’ best recent result in this competition was a 4th Round in 2010/11, famously dumping out Premier League giants Liverpool at Anfield along the way.
